Every block you travel in the Nether corresponds to 8 blocks of Overworld distance on the X and Z axes. This isn’t a quirk or a bug β it’s the reason Nether hubs exist at all.
To find where your Nether portal needs to be, take your Overworld X and Z coordinates and divide each by 8. If your base sits at Overworld coordinates X:2400, Z:-1600, your corresponding Nether position is X:300, Z:-200. That’s it. That’s the coordinate where your Nether-side portal must be positioned for the link to hold reliably.
How Portal Linking Actually Works
When you step through a portal, the game searches for an existing active portal within a search radius around your converted coordinates. If it finds one, you link to it. The most reliable linking method is to build your Overworld portal first, step through it, note the exact Nether coordinates where you arrive, and then physically move or rebuild the Nether-side portal to your pre-calculated target coordinates. Portal “theft” is a common problem that catches builders off guard. If two portals in the Nether sit close together, they can steal each other’s Overworld links β even if their Overworld counterparts are thousands of blocks apart. For serious hub builders, this means keeping all hub portals clearly spaced in Nether coordinates and actively removing any stray portals within a few hundred blocks of your hub. The Temple Ruin treats the portal as an ancient artefact. The Nether’s mob-spawning rules work in your favour once you understand them, because many visually appealing design choices are also naturally spawn-proof: bottom slabs, glass blocks and panes, carpet, stairs, open trapdoors, fence posts, leaves, and flower pots. Build A: The Solo Starter Hub

Activate your Overworld home portal, note the Nether coordinates where you arrive, and rebuild the Nether-side portal at your pre-calculated target coordinates if needed. Clear a 9Γ9 room around the portal, slab the entire floor with bottom slabs, and close in walls and ceiling. Add one tunnel north and one south, at minimum 3Γ3, with a packed ice strip along each floor. Place one sign at each tunnel entrance with destination name and Overworld coordinates. That’s a complete, functional starter hub. Upgrade aesthetics later β a working hub you use beats a beautiful hub you’re still planning.
Build B: The Late-Game Single-Player Hub
Pre-calculate all Nether coordinates before building anything, and draw a rough layout showing which cardinal direction each destination falls. Expand your central room to 21Γ21 with a ring corridor and four main exits at compass points. This ring structure is important: players can circulate without crossing the portal room, and new tunnels can be added off the ring without disrupting existing ones.
Install blue ice highways in your two most-used directions, packed ice in the others. Implement a consistent palette β polished blackstone for structure, quartz trim for contrast, glass floors with decorative blocks beneath β and your colour-coded labelling system. A small chest room off the central chamber stocked with travel supplies completes the build.
Build C: The Multiplayer Server Hub
Discuss destinations, tunnel allocation, and hub rules with your community before placing a block. Write them in a lectern book at the hub entrance.
